The four pillars of success

In thinking about what are the core disciplines that an entrepreneur needs to master and understand in order to succeed, I came up with the following:

Success can be built by strategically focusing your company’s core competency and developing it’s strengths in the areas or intersections (but choose wisely), then partnering with companies who have competitive advantages in other intersections of the ecosystem.

For example, a financial company will have it’s main focus in the top left quadrant, but to be successful it still needs a strong technology partner to develop it’s systems, and to imbue its employees with great people skills. And also, someone has to design it’s brand image, right?

Communication: The key to success

As I reflect on my past year working in a big corporation, I must admit that the one thing that really stands out as a key to success is effective communication. The executives who thrive and succeed are the ones with the best communication skills.

Clear communication is difficult because of the bias and preconceptions we all have. There are a plethora of books and papers written on this topic so I won’t bore you with pontification, however, I do want to leave you with this quote:

“I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but
I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.”
